The Halifax County - South Boston Regional Library is the best place to find the information you need. The catalog is on computer and contains the holdings of the Halifax and South Boston libraries. Forms are available if you wish to borrow a book from one of the other libraries.


Special events - Read the local paper, listen to the local radio station, or check back at this website frequently for special events to be held at your local library.


Library Cards - To receive a library card, you must be at least 6 years of age and have an identification number plus proof of current address. There is no charge to obtain a library card, however, there is a $2.50 charge for a replacement card. Please notify the library if your card is lost or stolen or if you have a change in name or address. Remember, your card is good at all branches of the Regional Library.


Check-out - You are responsible for all library materials checked out on your card. Materials may be returned in the outside book or video return when the library is closed. You can call or renew your materials online.

  • Books - 3 week check-out
                  -   Can be Renewed twice
                  - $.10 per day overdue fines (Max $2.00 each)
  • Books on Reserve - 10 day check-out
                  - Can NOT be Renewed
                  - $.25 per day fine if returned late
  • DVDs - 5 day check-out
                  - Limit of 5 DVDs
                  - Can be renewed once (for 10 days total)
                  - $1.00 per day fine if overdue
  • Magazines - 3 week check-out
                  -   Can be Renewed twice
                  - $.10 per day overdue fines (Max $2.00 each)
  • Audios (Books on CD) - 3 week check-out
                  -   Can be Renewed twice
                  - $.10 per day overdue fines (Max $2.00 each)


DVDs - Borrowers of DVDs must be at least 18 years of age and sign a special video contract accepting financial responsibility for lost or damaged videos. The loan period for DVDs is five days with a limit of five DVDs per patron. The fine for DVDs is $1.00 per day per DVD with a maximum fine of $15.00 per DVD. Do not leave DVDs in the car in hot or cold weather.


Story Time for children ages 3 to 9 is held from 6:00-6:30 P.M. at Halifax on Monday and at the same time on Thursday at South Boston.


Public Access Computers - Both Halifax and South Boston Libraries have public access computers which were donated by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Each library has a special children's computer which does not have access to the internet. There is no fee to use the computers. All patrons must sign the Rules of Usage contract at the front desk. Patrons aged 12 to 17 years may use the computers unsupervised only if the library has written permisson from the child's parent or guardian on file. Patrons under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times while using a computer! Patrons must have a valid library card to access the computers. Each patron will be allowed 120 minutes per day to use the computer.


Other Services - Both branches offer FAX service for $1.00 for each page (Library-provided coversheets are no longer free.). We will also make photocopies at $0.15 per page for black and white copies and $0.50 for color copies at Halifax. Printing from the computer costs $0.15 per page for black and white pages and $0.75 per page for color pages ($0.50 at Halifax).
