WINTER READING 2012

Children from toddlers through 13 years old may sign up at the library to receive a Winter Reading Booklet. In the booklet they can keep a list of every book they read or that is read to them during the month of February. Booklets are then returned to the library (either throughout the month or at the end.) For every tenth book read, the child will be able to pick out one Scholastic paperback book for free! The top two young readers in the county will receive a special prize.

A DICKENS OF A BOOK CHALLENGE

February 7, 2012 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’s birth. In his honor, we will be having a special book challenge for patrons of the Halifax Co Public Library System. For every Dickens novel checked out and read from our library, either a print edition or one of our new e-book copies, and you will be entered for a prize drawing held March 2nd.

Drawing prizes were given from many local businesses including: W.A. Fuller Menswear, Lantor’s, and Carter Bank & Trust.

SNUGGLY HELP

The library will be working with the charity Warm Up America this February and March. We will be accepting 7-inch by 9-inch rectangles knit or crocheted from cotton or acrylic yarn until the end of March. We will also accept donations of completed knit or crocheted afghans/blankets. The squares we collect will be sewn together to create a blankets for people in need.

For anyone wishing to learn how to knit or crochet, for help, or just to meet other community members who share your hobby, we will have a Needle Social at each branch. South Boston Branch February 9 at 6:00pm, and the Halifax Branch February 13 at 6:00pm. We will have spare yarn and a few needles and hooks for those wishing to learn. Tea will also be served.

Receive Email Reminders Before Items Are Due

A recent upgrade to the library's automated system now enables the library to send email reminders before materials are due. This great new feature will remind you when to renew/return your library books ahead of time. This is not only convenient for library patrons, it will also save the library money and time by automatically sending reminders and overdue notices by email, rather than printing and paying for postage to send paper overdue notices. To sign up for Email Reminders, simply call or come by either the Halifax or South Boston Libraries and give your email address to the library staff.

More Movies for More Days!

Now you can check out five DVDs for five days. DVDs can only be renewed once and the fine for late DVDs is $1.00 a day for each DVD. You still have to be eighteen to check out DVDs.

Changing Your Account Password Is Easier

Need to renew your books but the Library is closed? See a bestseller that you want to be on the waiting list for? Just want to know what you have checked out and when it's due back? If your patron account has a valid password, you can log in right now and do all of this. Don't have a password or forgot it? Just send email, phone, or go to any library branch in person and we can change it. You'll need to verify your library card number, name, address, and driver's license/ID number.

Sign Up For Email Notifications

Stay up to date on Library events and help us save money. Send us an email with your name and library card number in the message to receive all your notifications by email. Your address will never be given to a third party and you can tell us to remove you from our mailing list at any time.
